weird tomato shapes
« on: February 08, 2009, 01:33:30 PM »
From time to time, in our greenhouses, we get weird shaped tomatoes. This Duck is one of my favorites.
I did enhance the "eye" with a whole clove spice.

A little late for Valentine's, but I had misplaced this photo. This tomato is from last years crop.

Do you see lots of oddly shaped tomatoes or other produce that come from your garden?

Store-bought stuff seem to be the same A4 things all the time, so i am betting that a lot of stuff is being thrown away since it doesn't have the "correct shape".

you are correct, "a lot" of our tomatoes/cukes get thrown or "given" away because they are oddly shaped. most are quite editable, just ugly/weird looking. This happens mostly in the hot summer months and of course customers want only "the best" looking ones.

edit:   I should also add that I do use as many as I possibly can myself in tons of homemade tomato juice and stewed tomatoes and sweet pickles. So, if anyone needs some for canning, yal come!
The Deer also love to eat whatever we throw out, leaves and all.

I never really understood this. It's a weird world we live in when we throw away food that looks a bit different from the set stereotype, while half of the world is starving.
I love tomatoes by the way, especially when i make myself a sandwich :)

Fresh "coarse" bread (lots of grain, usually gray and heavy with lots of fibre. I don't care much for white bread)
Little bit of butter
Little bit of mayonnaise spread out
Good dutch cheese (Masdamer), or Gouda, or Norvegia (Norwegian) (Jarlsberg cheese preferred, i even found it in the states at any Walgreen etc)

5 or 6 slices of cucumber
couple of slices of tomato
sprinkle some salt on the top

For drink, a huge cup (0.5 liter) of  "Samovar Douchka"  Or "Russian Earl Grey" tea with 3 teaspoon of sugar.

:)

Yes, a weird world indeed. We have tried to give to people that only take a few if any, because they can't be bothered preserving. We even gave tomatoes to the "seniors Home" for awhile, and then they did not want them because they were small and some needed to be "trimmed" and again, they could not be bothered. :tomato:
We try... ::)

We love tomatoes also. When we have them, my Husband has a Peanut butter and tomato sandwich every day for his lunch. No joke. Actually it's not bad.  :)

I also love the foods you mention and we can get them all here.

I just found this photo from last crop. I added the top portion and the tooth picks.  :)
The two bottom portions grew as one.

Tomato Snowman......
