So, what do i need on my test bench?
« on: April 30, 2009, 10:18:24 AM »
At work, i am finishing up a test bench for computer repairs etc. I have started to get the parts that i need to be able to diagnose and fix things, but theres always something that i haven't thought about. I think i got most of the hardware ready, the software, not so much :)

Brought in so far:
Hardware:
- A bunch of different screws for cabinets, motherboards, laptops, fans etc.
- Some IDE, SATA cabling. Laptop 2,5 to IDE via USB adapter
- 17" LCD screen
- A few PCI graphics cards, some soundcards
- A couple of power supplies for desktop. A wide variety of laptop ac adapters.
- too many cans of compressed air. I am looking into small compressor here.
- Ceramic paste. Paste cleaning solutions etc.
- A couple of CPU fans and heatsinks.
- In the process of building a cheap desktop for tests, scans etc.
- lots of strips for cleaning up the cable clutter.

Software:
- Got a copy of XP home, but no computer yet. ( Windows 7 when it's released)
-  AVG, Spybot-SD.
- Need a good disk imaging program. I could probably use a good/better anti-virus app as well together with a spyware/malware scanner.

What does the forum say? :)

All of these programs can be used for free.  :)

I think Anti Vir is has a better than detection rate than AVG. http://www.free-av.com/ Also superantispyware is better than Spybot SD. http://www.superantispyware.com/

I have read than Drive Backup Express can image drives but I have not used it yet. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/

The test bench isn't finished yet. I've been up to my eyeballs in fixing computers since we had an offer until May 17th for mem upgrade/cleaning etc
And i've been away from 5 days in Kiel, Germany and a trip to sweden so there i got a nice little backlog just waiting for me :)
I will let you know when i am done :)
