Hurricane Igor hits Newfoundland

This week my home province of newfoundland was hit by Hurricane Igor.
The damage was very great all over the Island. The road to Clifton has been
washed out and it is not expected to be repaired for close to a month. I assume
they are back to receiving supplies by boat.
They have just had the power turned on in Clifton in the past hour.
My relatives are all o.k. and as far as I know there were no casualties.

wow. thats just nasty. I am glad your relatives were ok in the storm

 we don't have anything like hurricanes over here, but we usually get the remains of the hurricanes hitting our west coast pretty often every autumn. The storm surges are the worst where waves up to 30 meters are hitting our oil installations in the north sea. I am hidden behind the mountains so no bad weather except for the cold hits here. The damages must be counted in the hundreds of millions?


I did experience a mini-tornado 9 years ago, as it filled my hall with 5cm of water in 10 seconds while i was opening the front door to see what happened, but thats about it. 

What kind of wind did you see? Was this as bad as the hurricane that hit in 1991?

I am not sure of the estimated cost from this Hurricane, but I am sure it will be many, many millions of dollars.
This hurricane was far worse than Hurricane Bob in 1991, which was actually a tropical storm by the time it hit Newfoundland.
However, it did tremendous damage in Bermuda and the USA

We actually did not get any high winds to speak of from Igor. Yesterday was a different story.
The winds were terrible. it shook the trailer like crazy and we had to roll up the large side awning,
 as it was being ripped off.

Amazing. I really don't understand why this hasn't been on our news. The damages look really really bad.

The damages are tremendous. My brother says, every bridge large and small have been washed out.

Apparently many acres around Cooper's Brook (creek) was owned by my great grandfather. I did not know

this before. ?? Interesting.

The Troops arrived this week and are a real blessing to say the least.

Wow I haven't heard of this on the news here.  Glad to hear all of your relatives are ok.
The damage looks really bad, with the bridges gone and holes in roads the damage would cost millions on those two alone.
We get some cyclones here but never this far south.

The remnants hit our shores yesterdays, but the only thing i heard about it was that it was difficult conditions for soccer due to high wind :-s

I can't believe this news was not known to most of the world.

glad it fizzled out before reaching you.

It was weird in the way it was mentioned. Who cares about soccer when thousands of people have been affected by this storm in newfoundland.

But then again, i hate news. Today here in Norway, the budget for 2011 was presented, but on the radio, the most important thing that was mentioned was how our finance minister dressed for the presentation.

I think we've been hit by the Kim-Jong-Il bug (aka North Korea)

How are things over there now clifton? Are things starting to get back to normal?

Things are getting somewhat back to normal now. The troops
have built a lot of temporary bridges. and the regular road builders are working on the permanent
ones. the troops also helped with taking supplies to the people that were isolated. Yea troops.

Cod fish season opens next week again and my brother is really looking fwd. to that. Wish I
were close enough to get a couple. Yum.
