New Laptop
« on: November 26, 2011, 09:30:00 AM »
I brought a new laptop today. It is a Samsung RC720. Specs are here. http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-pc/performance/NP-RC720-S04AU/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=specification

Having never owned a laptop before, do you let the battery go completely flat before you charge it or can you charge it when it is low (10%)?

Congratulations on your new purchase :) That laptop looks sweet :)

I recommend that you never let the laptop go completely flat, especially when it's new as it might damage some cells in the battery. The first 3-5 times, charge it when it's almost ready to shut down. If you got la lithium battery, it will take some beating. Over here, the battery carries a 6 month warranty, so i have always told customers to let it deplete to around 10% and then charge it and measure the battery life along the way. if there is something wrong with it, it should show within 6 months.

I also hear that some people rarely charge above 80% as it supposedly make the battery last longer, but i do not know if that is true. I am going to test that one day.

I was given a 2006 model laptop about 6 months ago that was going to be thrown. It lacks the covers underneath for disk and ram and someone has used a knife on the palm rests. It was completely dead when i got it.  The battery was not good, but i have more or less had it plugged in since i got it and the battery is better now for some reason.  I think that in the end, if you do leave it plugged in often, be sure to drain it once in a while.

Oh, and pm me your address yet one more time. I am sending something to both you and Clifton for X-mas on Tuesday :)

Edit: On second glance, i really liked that laptop. Now you got me looking hehe. Let us know how you like it :)

When I first turned it on and setup windows it had 20% left. Played around with it some more and it went flat. Put it on charge and let it charge to 100%. My wife was playing a DVD and it depleted the battery rather quickly. Plugged in the power in at about 14%. Running it on power at the moment.

Never head of the rarely charge it over 80% thing.

So far so good. Now If I can only get the wireless modem working.  :damcomp:

Thanks, PM sent.  :)

Thanks. I hope it works well too. I could have brought a cheaper one but they all had a smaller screen. :)

Mine is falling apart too, but then, it should have been thrown away almost a year ago as it was totally dead. I fixed it and upgraded the cpu and added some memory so it has been decent, but now it's harder and harder to keep it alive :-)

I usually shop for great deals myself, but once in a while, getting what you want feels a lot better :) Enjoy your new laptop. :)

Oh, thanks for PM. Gifts will be sent on Friday :) It's not much, just a little something :)

I found out what was wrong with the wireless modem. It was locked to another ISP. Went out and brought a ethernet/wireless router and all is good. :)

I spoke to the guy in the computer regarding the battery and he recommends running the laptop on power if possible to get extra life out of the battery.

I don't buy the latest hardware as it is to expensive. :)

Oh and thanks for the gift. :)

I would drain it once in a while just in case since a full battery with the charger connected to it will kill the power cells if it is not drained. Maybe there are new kinds of batteries these days, it's been a while since i bought a new one hehe. (2004)

still got piles of hardware for desktops around, so if there is anything you need, i'll gladly ship it your way :-)
