I'll bite

Core i7 is what he is looking for i imagine together with an Nvidia tesla.

8 or perhaps even 16gb of memory will help a lot. Hmm. Fast ssd disk for boot/applications and a 1tb samsung f1 for storage.

I will try to put together a list today Smiley

Here is a little list from newegg:

Core i7 940 - $559,-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115201

Asus p6t - $210,-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131386

6GB DDR-III memory: Get two of those for a total of 12GB at $160,-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609361

ATI FirePro V7750:It will suck at Crysis, but CAD is no problem: $740,-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814195082

Samsung Spinpoint F1: $85,-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152101

Antec 900 Combo deal with PSU: $140,-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129058

$1894,-

Add some Optical reader into the mix and you'll have close to $100,- left on the budget.

Depending on which CAD software he will use, he could probably go for a cheaper graphics option and add a 64GB SSD disk for OS and applications.  If he already have a case, get a 750W antec PSU instead.

Lots of options at that price range Smiley
