So.. i got fired today... Update: Yay New job!

Not in the best mood today, but i guess these things happen.

The company has three owners that are splitting up the company and so there was no room left for me. The good part is that i can write my own resume, the bad part is that i have to show up for the next three months (obligatory period in Norway).

I use to be on the unemployment line for a long time and my mood was in the shitter at times. Especially after many applications and no interview.

Things haven't really progressed that much lately. I am working on a few leads, but being out of IT for 4 years is an eternity but i hope to get back into the game in the next few weeks

Mood is better, but that might be because i am doing a lot of yard work these days. It sure helps together with the weekly soccer practice (www.fuglabar.com)

I guess this is the right thread to update you all on whats going on.

Mostly i am trying to find a job, but the market is drying up in anticipation of the coming "mortgage armageddon".

Applied quite a number of places, but no good news so far. Hope this week brings some good news, otherwise i will have to aim much lower.  I did get one job, but it was only for three months which i turned down.

I am still quite pleased though with the way things are going I guess that things that are supposed to happen will happen, so there is no rush

 Things usually have a way of working out for the good.
Sometimes it just takes a awhile.
In our case, I am so glad we did not get any of the first "retirement properties" we bid on.
We eventually found a property that feels so right and perfect for us.
It took a few months, headaches and tons of correspondence but eventually we got the Deed. ;D

A little update.

Have applied to several jobs, but no luck so far. No interviews either. The job market over here is virtually empty these days. A lot of companies are laying off people, and temp workers are finding that their contract wont be renewed. I applied to 3 temp agencies where all were saying that getting a new job wouldn't be a problem. All stopped calling a couple of weeks ago.

I think we'll see a pretty big spike in unemployment pretty soon. As for aiming lower, thats what i do but even those jobs aren't being advertised anymore.

I am still in a good mood - thank god for a great safety net here.

It's good to hear that you are still in a good mood.

Are you applying for job that are advertised, not advertised or both? Have you called the temp agencies?

In Aus our unemployment figures are rising. Up from 4.1% to 4.3% (national ave) and it going to get worse. 2 years ago we had not enough quality people to fill the job that where available. Now it's the other way round.

I am looking for anything with a decent paycheck really, (level of what i bring home on my butt). I am putting out applications as soon as i see something remotely interesting. The past few weeks have seen absolutely nothing come up at all - Not even a single warehouse monkey job.

Gov will take care of me for a long time still, so i am not worried now - i am going to get worried when Christmas sales tanks and thousands with a masters degree are looking for the same jobs that i do.

Glad your spirits are up there H-Kon and to know your Gov. has a good
package in place to help the unemployed.

Unemployment here is just above 6%  I am sure that will get worse as more and
more Companies are closing their doors.
There is help here for the unemployed, in the form of "unemployment Insurance"
which one pays into while working and is a % of what you were earning. There is
 also Gov. suppliment if needed, pretty much as long as one needs it.
Hopefully things will turn around sooner than later, for everyone.

Well, today marked the ending of my unemployment. Just got a job offer as a servicetechnician at a big computer repairshop, so i will be starting on Monday

How do you think you will go being out of the IT industry for so long?

[H-kon]

That remains to be seen to be honest. Fixing things is what i know best, so doing it for a living might finally be the right career path that i have been looking for for 10 years. The funny thing is that i applied there in June and have kept it warm all this time which may be why i got it in the first place.  The other thing is that when unemployed over here, you cannot refuse work being offered to you, so it was a good thing that the job that i was offered was something that i really wanted to do.

The paycheck is quite a bit lower than what i had before and really not much more than what i receive on work comp. , but as long as the work environment and the job is fun, the pay is second nature to me. Hopefully, if i do well, they'll add something to it down the road but seeing that unemployment is skyrocketing, it's the businesses that sets the terms these days, not the employed as it were just a few months ago.

I am sure i'll comment some more on the new job when i get started on Monday.
