My little "Hackintosh". (Mac OS X on a PC)
« on: June 12, 2008, 03:16:26 PM »
I finally had some time due to recently posted events to get my little Hackintosh back up and running.  It now runs OS 10.5.2 on the following hardware:

Gigabyte GA-Q35M-S2 Q35 chipset Socket 775 motherboard
Core 2 Duo E8400 3ghz
4GB memory
7800 GT PCI-e

The only thing that didn't work was the integrated NIC on the motherboard and the Intel X3100 integrated VGA (only 1024x768). After i added a standard 3Com 3C905 TX, everything ran smoothly.

I have been running Vista on this machine (dual boot) for quite some time, and what surprised me was how snappy everything is.  I haven't   finished installing software and other things just yet, but i attached an image of my current desktop so that you can see for yourself :)

I think i am going to to use this for a couple of weeks to see if this is something that i am comfortable with using full time. I still cannot get used to Linux, Vista is too slow, and since i do not game much except for on my PS3, perhaps this is something for me :)

I have used the Mac OS for years now. Last Mac I used had a very old OS and a Motorola 68040 cpu in it.

I guess you had Vista 64bit to access the 4GB of memory? How does OS 10.5.2 handle 4GB of memory?

If Vista is so slow maybe you could go back to XP? :D

OS X is probably my favorite OS to use. I more or less gave up on trying to run it on my PC after I got my PowerBook but I might attempt to get it working again. The PowerBook is really starting to show its age and the screen is getting a strange pink hue.  :-\

My last mac was the first iMac. G3 233Mhz with 32MB of memory. It ran OS 8.1 if i recall correctly. It was at Opera Software that i got to play a bit more with it since i was the mac guy around there.

Performance is excellent. Right in between Vista 32-bit which i used and a fresh install of XP. I have been running "GarageBand" all day which was the reason that i installed it in the first place and i have not really ran into many problems except for that i cannot use Software Update :)

It seem to handle 4GB just great, but i have not stress tested it much yet. I think it is still 32-bit, but i am not quite sure. There are certainly a few things i need to learn as there are quite a few things that i have forgotten in the past few years.

Oh, and one game is running: Football Manager 2008 :) I bought it a while a go and i discovered it has both the PC and Mac version on the same CD.

setiathome is hurting a bit though as i have not installed it yet on the Mac. Going to be interesting to compare results when i get it going again.
