Went to the local landfill here to get rid of a couple of really old and worn CRT's that couldn't even reproduce accurate color anymore and what did i find? Socket 478 FIC VC37 produced for Medion. 845G chipset, integrated 8MB Intel VGA, LAN, Audio. No AGP. One Pentium IV Williamette 1,5 Ghz, Soundblaster Live 5.1 Digital, Turtle Beach Vortex 2 soundcard 512MB DDR PC3200 Bought the cheapest case with an included PSU for it which was a Q-tec and replaced the cpu with one of my spares, a Celeron 2,66 (Northwood) and my last stick of DDR a 256MB upping it to 768MB. One of the onboard IDE connectors has a broken pin, so i can only attach a disk drive and one optical unit to it, but other than that it is running great. So now you decide what i should do with it

You tossed out a couple of CRT's and came home with a socket 478 board that works! I don't get that lucky. With a Celeron 2.66 cpu you could run folding@home or seti with it. What does Jette think you coming home with another computer?

She just shakes her head usually when i bring something like that home. It has been a while since i got that lucky I think i'll take another trip tomorrow just to see what i can find. It does not seem like the landfill is a target for "junk computing" people hehe. On second thought, the Celeron 2,66 is a Celeron D 330, but the motherboard think it's a regular Celeron. I also have a regular P4 2.0 ghz and a regular Celeron 2,60 Ghz. Which one would be faster? The board does not offer any overclocking options either. One vote for folding/seti then

It's running seti, although slowly. the lack of cache makes it a slow seti@home'er It still boggles the mind though that people throw perfectly working computers out the door. I am glad i do not work at a computer recycling plant. i'd go nuts.

If the Celeron D 330 is been recognized as a Celeron 2.66 maybe there is a bios update for the board. A Celeron D 330 runs at 2.66ghz, has a bus speed of 533mhz, 16k of L1 data cache and L2 cache 256k. A "Northwood" Celeron 2.66ghz has a bus speed of 400mhz, 8k of L1 data cache and L2 cache of 128k According to this site Celeron 2.66ghz is slightly faster than a P4 2 ghz. So a Celeron D 330 would be faster again. http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.htmlDoes Seti make use SSE3?

Ooops. didn't see this one. I came home with a complete computer, sans case and psu My mom is actually using it now (bought a case for it) Seti uses both sse 2, 3 and 4, 4,1. using the optimized clients posted in the boinc thread. My E8400 manages 2900+ credits a day where it on the standard x86 client would have returned around 1200 credits. I never got the Celeron D to use its second core as i only seem to have 400fsb motherboards, but i installed into the computer my mom uses. Anyone need a Northwood Celeron 2,2, Celeron 2,66 or a Pentium 4 2.0 (400 fsb). I'll ship them for free.

I have 3 socket 478 boards in my family. One with Pentium 4 2.0ghz and 2 with Pentium 4 1.6ghz. Putting faster chips in them will give them a boost. Not sure of postage cost to Australia, if you can find someone closer than me that's ok.

I'm guessing the Celeron chips run at 2.2ghz and 2.66ghz?
Edit: I just read your other thread, It looks like they do.
Do you want to move this discussion in the "My excess hardware pile" thread?

I'm sure you wrote down the address correctly, they should get here. The cpu I got a few months back was in a small padded bag.
