So AMD launched the Phenom II CPU's yesterday.

Reports from all over the internet indicate that the top of the line model places itself between the Q9300 and the Q9550 at roughly the same price as the Q9550. (Here in Norway).
With this release, the old "X6xxx" series of processors from Intel are now "Obsolete".

The E8600 is still the best dual core cpu out there which is recommended if your are into any gaming.

If you have an AM2+ motherboard, a BIOS upgrade is usually all it takes to use this CPU.

Core i7 is still way better than anything else out on the market.

Rumors also indicate that Intel is going to slash some prices in late January, so February is going to be interesting, also coupled with that AMD will launch a whole series of new CPU's that month.

I found this review.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3492&p=1

Quote
Compared to the Core 2 Quad Q9400, the Phenom II X4 940 is clearly the better pick. While it's not faster across the board, more often than not the 940 is equal to or faster than the Q9400. If Intel can drop the price of the Core 2 Quad Q9550 to the same price as the Phenom II X4 940 then the recommendation goes back to Intel.

Interesting. I didn't read the Anandtech review and he says its even better than the other sites do.

Hmm. I wonder if i could get my hands on one.  I am in the market for a quad, and rumors are that the Q9550 is going to down in price pretty soon.

The Q9550's are down in price together with the Q9650 and i am _this_close to getting one.
The Phenom II's (PII?) are down in price as well, but i don't have a motherboard for it.

Hmm.. What do do Smiley

I assume you have motherboards for the Q9x50?
I don't know the prices in Norway but wouldn't be more expensive to buy a cpu and motherboard?

To me PII sounds like Pentium II. Grin

The Q9650 costs 660 Australian dollars over here (3000 NOK). A motherboard can be had for about 100 Australian dollars

The Phenom II's cost just below 400, and a motherboard is about 150 or so.

The PII moniker sound too much like the Pentium II Smiley

PhII Smiley

Due to recent good events, i am going to treat myself with some new hardware with quite a lot of  video encoding/converting, massive seti usage for primary use:

Option 1:  One Q9550, or Q9650 (Going for 2400/3000 NOK respectively)  (Will replace E8400)

Option 2: Save up a bit more, get LGA1366 and Core i7 (Looking at 5K NOK)  (Will replace E8400)

Option 3: Seti for the win: 2x Q8200 (1500 NOK each) (Will replace 2x E5200 that i am selling)

Option 4: Phenom II 940 with a new AM2+ motherboard (3K NOK)  (Will replace E8400)

Please vote Smiley

PS: 1000 NOK= 225 $AUD - 182 $CAD

If you are willing to save up a bit more I would go with the Core i7.

You may want to look at this

Thank you for the great link.

It didn't make it any easier. Hmm. With Core i5 also coming soon.

Hmm.  I am filling shopping carts with so many configurations now and i can't decide.

I think i have an anti-shopping gene in me somewhere  death

I did a bit of reading on the Core i5 and it seems that you can't overclock those chips.

Well, i ordered a Q9550 today and will probably get another one when it comes down in price.
Will pick it up on Saturday.

I thought about the Phenom II, but i already have Quad capable motherboards so forking out $100,- USD minimum for a quality AM2+ board was putting the pricetag above a single Intel Quad for me.

Never got a reply on my order of Q9550, so 2x Q9400 is arriving instead.
Broke the bank a bit on it, but it will be a most welcome upgrade Smiley
